"Natural" means something different in each federation. One asks for seven drug-free years, another for ten, and they test in different ways. If you coach competitors, or you're choosing where to step on stage yourself, the differences decide who is eligible and what the day looks like.

Everything below was read on each federation's own website on October 4, 2026, and each row links to its source. Rules change, so confirm them on the federation's pages before you register. I've competed and coached in the OCB, so that is the one I know first-hand.

The federations one by one

OCB: Organization of Competition Bodies

The OCB describes itself as “the world's largest and most prestigious all-natural bodybuilding federation, sanctioning 130+ drug-tested natural bodybuilding events annually” (ocbonline.com). Its rule: Drug free and compliant with the WADA Anti-Doping Code for a minimum of seven years before competing; some substances have their own, shorter windows. Testing: A pre-competition polygraph screening for every competitor, plus urinalysis for pro-qualifying winners, the top three in pro divisions, and random testing. For the full picture, including divisions and the pro card, read our guide to competing in the OCB.

WNBF: World Natural Bodybuilding Federation

The WNBF calls itself “The home of natural bodybuilding since 1989” (worldnaturalbb.com). Its rule: A minimum of 10 years drug-free from anabolic androgenic agents, peptides, growth hormones and banned prescription hormones; other substances have shorter windows. Testing: Policies compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code and Prohibited List. The federation says it has over 40,000 urine test results on file since 1989. It runs amateur and professional world championships.

INBA PNBA

The INBA is the amateur body and the PNBA its professional side. Its policy page states “INBA PNBA is World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Compliant” (naturalbodybuilding.com). Testing: All athletes must pass a WADA-certified urine or blood test, with testing against the current WADA Prohibited List by WADA-accredited labs and random testing in and out of competition. Its headline event is the Natural Olympia.

What about other federations?

There are more natural federations than these three, some national and some regional. We've only listed the ones whose current rules we could read on their own websites. If you're considering another one, look for the same three things on its site: the drug-free rule in writing, how testing is done, and who gets tested.

How to choose, as an athlete or as a coach

  • Check eligibility first. The drug-free windows differ. An athlete who qualifies for one federation may not qualify for another, and supplements or prescriptions can matter.
  • Look at the show calendar. The best federation on paper is no use if its nearest show is a flight away. Travel adds cost and stress in the final week.
  • Match the category to the physique. Category names overlap between federations, but the criteria aren't identical. Read the criteria page for the category you're entering.
  • Understand the pro path. Each federation has its own route from amateur to professional. If turning pro is the goal, know the route before choosing the show.
  • Go and watch one. A day in the audience shows you how the federation judges and how its shows run.

For coaches: one process, whichever federation

The federation changes the rules of entry. It doesn't change the work. Every prep still runs on a weekly check-in, a meal plan you adjust as the athlete leans out, a training plan, and a planned final week. Our free contest prep check-in template and peak week tracker work for any of them, and CoachPilot keeps each athlete's plan, check-ins and messages in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Three of the best known are the Organization of Competition Bodies (OCB), the World Natural Bodybuilding Federation (WNBF) and INBA PNBA. All three publish drug-free requirements and drug testing policies on their own websites.

Yes. The OCB requires athletes to be drug free and compliant with the WADA Anti-Doping Code for a minimum of seven years before competing; some substances have their own, shorter windows.

The WNBF's policy states: a minimum of 10 years drug-free from anabolic androgenic agents, peptides, growth hormones and banned prescription hormones; other substances have shorter windows.

They set the bar in different ways, so there isn't one honest ranking. The WNBF publishes the longest drug-free period for anabolic agents, the OCB screens every competitor before each show, and INBA PNBA tests against the WADA Prohibited List through WADA-accredited labs. Read each policy before you choose.

Start with the shows you can travel to, then check that your history meets that federation's drug-free rule, that it has a category that suits your physique, and how its amateurs turn professional. A coach who has prepared athletes for that federation is worth asking.
